The sixteenth annual Local 701 car and bike show was one to remember, the decision to hold this year’s event on a Sunday certainly paid off. Despite the fact that we spent the day worried about the potential thunderstorms in the forecast that seemed to loom but never came, the event was well attended and several members decided to bring their families and friends.
For the previous fifteen years Local 701 always held the annual car and bike show on a Wednesday night in conjunction with our regularly scheduled monthly membership meeting and while the event was always well attended, this year we wanted to try something different, something for the whole family.
“Instead of holding the show on a Wednesday night we felt like it would be a better idea to make a day out of it, something for the family.” said Directing Business Representative Sam Cicinelli.
A better idea indeed. Several members brought their families and friends along, it was great to see kids at the event.
Local 701 member Chris Becktel’s wife, Vallene set up a booth and did face painting for all the children and Organizer Rich Handler’s wife Cathy spent the day blowing up balloons and making sure the kids had fun.
Several members played bean bags, and while there weren’t quite enough playing to have an official tournament, we have no doubt that next year if the weather is better we should have enough people to set up quite a competition.
In addition to games and face painting for the kids, the Local 701 Organizing committee cooked food for everyone and organized several raffles for attendees.
First, second, and third place winners this year once again received custom made trophies which were made by a Local 701 represented shop, Rustic House Iron Works of Shorewood, Illinois.
Again this year, the winners were selected by popular vote of all show attendees and this year’s first place winner for the car show classification was Local 701 member Kevin Zizzo of Marquardt of Barrington Buick / GMC in Barrington, Illinois with his 1962 Chevrolet Impala pictured here. The first place award for the motorcycle classification was won by Business Representative Mark Utley with his 1996 Harley—Davidson Dyna Wide Glide, pictured below. Congratulations to both of you.
As we continue to hold this event on Sundays from now on we are sure that the event will continue to grow. A huge thanks goes out to all those who attended this year’s event and to all those who volunteered this year to help make this a successful show.
